Ichirakutei Eisui

Ichirakutei Eisui

Active 1789-182

A pupil of Hosoda Eishi. Among Eishi’s pupils, Eisui was the third most prolific after Eisho and Eiri in terms of the number of his colour prints. His speciality was bust portraits derived from the late 1790s’ works of Utamaro, and there is a particularly fine group in which the face of each courtesan completely fills the sheet. Eisui also provided illustrations for the popular novels of Jippensha Ikku.
